when Shapiro signed him I honestly thought it was some kind of sick joke to torment us fans even further. Then we were hearing thing like how they could see Brady getting plenty of bats even as much as 400. Then Charlie kept penciling him in every day like they were going to see that he got those AB's. The Anderson signing is probably the best example of how inept Shapiro is as a G.M. Throw in the Ricky G signing and the Mark Wholers inking and you just have to scratch your head. The belief that this team will be strong again by 2004 is hysterical. Someone please lay out the projected lineup of that championship winning team because I am sitting on pins and needles waiting to see it.

I admit that I was wrong from predicting that Anderson would improve this year, although his OBP is still pretty good especially considering his BA. However, I think that saying that Shapiro is inept for signing Anderson is a travesty. If you think about it, who else would be playing instead of Anderson? We already have Branyan hitting around the Mendoza Line as well, Aven has one hit since he got called up, and the guy we called up to replace Anderson, Magruder, wasn't even hitting .300 at AAA. Signing Anderson was an attempt to possibly get someone who may help the ball club and had some sort of track record in previous years. However, now with the release of Cordero and Anderson and the call-up of Magruder and Aven, I believe the transistion is in full swing and is now in rebuilding. Sometimes signings are not great on the face value, but if you take it into context of what the other options were for the team you have to realize it was not as horrible as it initially seems.

Wohlers and Gutierrez stink but Anderson is not a travesty for 2 reasons:

- he's hardly costing anything
- he's only playing because of injuries to Escober, Bradley and Cabrera

I disagree. The signings were low-cost gambles to fill positions with veterans. Brady Anderson was connected via Eddie Murray, both played together, I think it was an OK move that failed.

Just because a move fails doesn't mean it was a bad move.
Sometimes it means it just didn't work out.

Frankly, I'm blown away that Anderson had four stolen bases and was never caught! Can someone explain how almost every other Indian is around 50% in the stolen base department and he's 4-4!

Charlie should have been using him as a pinch-runner in close games in the later innings.

The buyout makes this an awful move. More telling is the claim that he only cost $200 G's no matter what. Now all of a sudden there's a $1 million buyout? I doubt that detail got by the Tribe brass but it wasn't mentioned at the time.

It was mentioned, but a bit vaguely. I understood that they would pay $1 mil if they didn't pick up his 2003 option for $4 mil. Regardless, it's a small price to pay for a bad bad mistake. Can you imagine getting that double to break up the no-no?
